People Over Freight: Why I Built the Anti-Corporate Brokerage

In 1989, my mother did something crazy. She started a freight brokerage. Back then, women were a stark minority in transportation, but she had grit, she had vision, and she built CBT from the ground up.

In 2002, I came home to work for her. I started where everyone should: on the phones, dispatching. Over the next two decades, I touched every square inch of this business—claims, accounting, operations, you name it. Together, we modernized the systems and watched the company scale from a steady $8M–$10M business to over $30M in revenue. We did it by doing things right, protecting our carriers, and actually caring about the people executing the work.

In 2021, we made the decision to sell to a massive corporate entity. They came to the table with beautiful promises: they’d keep me on as General Manager, they’d inject sales and marketing support, and they’d let us keep doing what we do best.

It was a lie.

Instead of support, they forced corporate metrics down our throats. They traded relationships for spreadsheets. The culture we spent decades building was gutted by bureaucracy, and I watched everything my mother started get choked out by corporate politics. I stayed, but the resentment was eating me alive. I felt like I had let down our legacy by letting them buy us.

Then, in 2024, life hit hard.

My stepson, who has special needs, was hospitalized with a severe, life-threatening lung disease. For nine grueling months, my wife and I lived out of a hospital room, fighting right alongside him. I didn't abandon my duties—I split my week, working three days in the office and two days from a laptop at his bedside.

Six months into that nightmare, I walked into the office one morning. There was no warning. There was no "Hey Blair, we need you to step it up." Just a cold, immediate: "You're let go, effective immediately." They fired me while my son was hooked up to machines in a hospital bed. Because to a corporate machine, you aren't a human being with a family. You're just a line item on a profit-and-loss statement.

I was angry. I was hurt. But I am a man of faith, and I know for a fact that God puts us exactly where we need to be, precisely when we need to be there. That corporate pink slip wasn't a defeat—it was my release papers.

 I didn't build Anthem Logistics alone, and I didn't build it just to start another business.

I partnered with my brother, Robby Banks, of over 25 years to build an act of defiance against the corporate logistics machine. Together, as family and co-owners, we built a sanctuary for Independent Freight Agents who are sick of the exact same corporate nonsense.
